On 20 November 2020, WISTA Romania was the main co-organiser of the online academic focus group “The role of the European Commission, IMO and ILO for empowering women in maritime”

Considering that positive change in reducing maritime gender gap requires a holistic approach, the purpose of the event was to gather academia and other maritime stakeholders sharing bright ideas and timely suggestions on how the policy makers from the European Union (EU), the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Labor Organization (ILO) should jointly contribute to the motivation and empowerment of women in the maritime.

Members of WISTA Norway, WISTA Colombia and WISTA Angola joined the event, together with representatives of the European Commission, IMO, governmental agencies, the business sector, seafarers unions and other maritime associations.

Results of discussions are used in drafting the academic proposal “Joint EU- IMO-ILO Agenda of Change for Women Empowerment in the Maritime”. The draft, together with a shorter version of the video will be further sent to special departments of the EU, IMO and ILO, as suggestions for women empowerment activities.
