WISTA International attends The International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU) – Student Forum 11th-12th of July 2023

The International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU) hosted its Student Forum 2023 between the 11th-12th of July, sponsored by the NIPPON Foundation at the IMO headquarters in London where WISTA International was invited, alongside representatives from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), INTERTANKO and the Nautical Institute (NI) to Co-Facilitate the student working groups under the World Maritime Theme 2023, “MARPOL at 50 – Our commitment goes on.”

The Forum was opened by IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim, where 50 plus students from Maritime Universities from around the globe, were separated in 6 working groups each assigned a different Sustainability Development Goal to work on. The chosen themes were Sustainability of Maritime Education and Training, Maritime Education and Training in the Digital Era, Greener Shipping, Gender Equality and Diversity, Working and living conditions at sea and marine resources protection.

WISTA International Co-facilitated the session on Gender Equality and Diversity, represented by WISTA UK Secretary Gina Panayiotou, alongside core facilitator Ninna Roos, Maritime Senior Lecturer of Satakunta University of Applied Sciences – SAMK and was composed of students from Australia, USA, Sweden, Germany, Japan, Croatia, Turkey and Finland.

It was a pleasure to participate and witness the commitment and passion of the new generation of maritime, which was evidenced by all 6 presentations. WISTA International would like to congratulate all students participating, whose passion and commitment to make the maritime industry more sustainable was evident in each presentation. We would also like to thank and congratulate the organizers IAMU for the great work done and the IMO for hosting.
