Record-Breaking WISTA Spain 2023 AGM and Conference Celebrated in Algeciras

Under the Theme “Strait of Gibraltar, Bridge of Cooperation,” WISTA Spain Achieves Unprecedented Success
From May 12th to 13th, Algeciras proudly hosted the “Annual General Assembly (AGM) and Conference” of WISTA Spain, an association that has impressively expanded to 148 members in 2023. As part of WISTA International (Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association) since 2007, the event drew an astonishing 200 professionals representing over 100 companies and organizations from not only Algeciras but also 12 other cities, even beyond Spain’s borders, working across the maritime business spectrum.
The Conference commenced on Friday, May 12th, under the theme “Strait of Gibraltar, Bridge of Cooperation.” Mr. Gerardo Landaluce, Chairman of the Port Authority of the Algeciras Bay, Ms. Inmaculada Olivero, Junta de Andalucía Territorial Delegate for Economy, Finance, European Funds, Industrial Policy and Energy in Cadiz, Mr. Jose Ignacio Landaluce, Mayor of Algeciras and Ms. Rosana Velasco, President of WISTA Spain, inaugurated the event. The closing ceremony showcased Ms. Olga Carrión, Director of the Instituto Andaluz de la Mujer, Mr. Víctor Jiménez, Chairman of the Council of the International Maritime Organization, and Mr. Benito Núñez Quintanilla, Director-General of the Spain Merchant Marine.
The Conference featured participation from the Port of Algeciras Bay, Tanger Med Port, and the Port of Ceuta. Speakers from companies and organizations operating in the Strait of Gibraltar area or closely linked to it were also present, such as Algeciras Maritime Border Post, Aragón Logistics Platform, Calsina Carré, FRS Iberia Group, Rail&Truck Strait Union, Spanish Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Tangier (CECIT), Spanish Economic and Trade Office of the Embassy of Spain in Rabat, and Renault.
The event, bolstered by over 60 sponsors and collaborators, provided a unique platform for fostering dialogue among industry professionals. Attendees continued exchanging experiences during the coffee break at the Naval Command of Algeciras, the cocktail reception, the boat tour around Algeciras Bay and port, and the closing dinner at the Algeciras Royal Yacht Club.
During the AGM on May 13th, the Association reviewed and welcomed the new associate members who joined over the past year. WISTA Spain awarded its annual solidarity donation to Spanish Red Cross, a humanitarian institution, of a voluntary nature and of public interest. The city of Santander was chosen as the location for the WISTA Spain 2024 Annual Meeting, and the upcoming WISTA International 2023 Conference in Montevideo this October was discussed.
