‘The ocean has a noise problem – and it’s one we can no longer ignore’.
We are pleased to share the latest edition of Reflections by the WISTA International Environmental Committee, authored by Hermoine Manuel (WISTA South Africa) and Eliana Savvidi (WISTA Cyprus), where we explore the growing issue of underwater radiated noise (URN) from shipping and why it deserves greater attention as part of the maritime sustainability agenda.
While decarbonisation rightly remains a priority, reducing underwater noise is another important step toward protecting marine biodiversity. The good news is that many of the solutions such as improved vessel design, quieter propulsion systems, and operational measures can also support greater energy efficiency.
In this edition, we highlight the work of the GloNoise Partnership, a global collaboration between the IMO, UNDP and GEF that is helping countries build the knowledge, tools and capacity needed to understand and mitigate underwater noise from shipping.
We hope it encourages further discussion on how the maritime sector can advance both climate and biodiversity goals, and continue building a future where ships are not only cleaner, but quieter too. We’d love to hear your thoughts.
