IMO–WMU Women’s Leadership and Empowerment (WLE) Training Course
The IMO–WMU Women’s Leadership and Empowerment (WLE) training course was launched in 2025, delivered in a hybrid format that included in-person sessions at the World Maritime University (WMU) in Malmö. Supported by WISTA International, the programme aims to cultivate confident, capable leaders who can navigate complex maritime challenges, inspire their teams, and drive innovative solutions across the global maritime industry.
The WLE course features a comprehensive curriculum covering modules such as critical thinking, gender mainstreaming, strategic thinking, entrepreneurship, and leadership. Its integrated approach combines technical project management training with the development of interpersonal and managerial competencies. Through collaborative learning and group-based activities, participants are encouraged to transform theoretical knowledge into practical applications.
Designed to advance gender equity within the maritime sector, the course addresses existing barriers and equips participants with advanced strategic management and leadership skills. It fosters confidence, self-awareness, and professional growth while promoting knowledge sharing, networking, and collaboration among women professionals. The training includes interactive lectures, workshops, case studies, and group exercises led by international experts in maritime leadership, public speaking, project management, and team building.
The course is open to women leaders and professionals in mid-career stages working in the public maritime sector, including maritime administrations, port authorities, coast guards, and maritime education and training institutions. Women from the private maritime and logistics sectors in countries who are members of national WISTA associations may apply for fellowships provided by WISTA International. Calls for applications and details on upcoming course start dates will be announced in due course.
