February 3, 2022
NAWE is seeking its next President. The National Association of Waterfront Employers (“NAWE”) is the voice for U.S. marine terminal operators, stevedores, and operating port authorities. Our members are U.S. entities who are responsible for safely and securely transporting freight and passengers between vessels, trucks, and rail at ports in 34 states and Puerto Rico. Terminals are located on the Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf Coasts; the Great Lakes; and the inland waterway system. https://nawe.us. NAWE’s offices are located at 211 N. Union St, Ste 100, Alexandria, VA 22314.
The successful candidate will be a leader who is conversant about maritime terminal and port issues including infrastructure, climate and environment, security, waterfront workers, and more. The President will report to the Board of Directors and has full authority for the management of the association and its staff, with responsibility for advocating before the Legislative and Executive Branches of the Federal government. The President also serves as Executive Director of the National Maritime Safety Association, (NMSA) subject to the terms and conditions within the signed Memorandum of Understanding between the two Associations. There shall be no additional compensation or benefits for her/his service as Executive Director of that Association. (www.nmsa.us)
The President serves as chief operating officer of the organization and, in partnership with the Board, is responsible for the success of NAWE. Together, the Board and President will assure NAWE’s relevance to the maritime industry, the accomplishment of NAWE’s mission and vision, and the accountability of NAWE to its members. This entails working with legislators, regulatory agencies, and representatives of other organizations to promote legislative and regulatory policies that encourage a healthy marine terminal industry and address the issues of NAWE constituencies. The successful candidate will possess the skills and functions of a leader, including strong verbal and written skills necessary to testify before congressional committees and/or in public forums and at least ten years’ experience as a leader. The President will provide general oversight of all NAWE activities, manage staff and day-to-day operations, and assure a smoothly functioning, efficient organization.
As President, this individual must demonstrate critical competencies in four broad categories: commitment to results, business savvy, leading change, and motivating members.
NAWE is committed to a work environment in which all individuals are treated with respect.
