August 4, 2023
WISTA Uruguay has been the first NWA founded in South America and this year we are celebrating our 15th Anniversary!
Looking back to 2008 and seeing all the work we have done, we feel very proud and are tremendously excited to have the chance to receive all our WISTA sisters this year !!
Uruguay is a South American country known for its verdant interior and beach-lined coast. The capital, Montevideo, revolves around Plaza Independencia, once home to a Spanish citadel. It leads to Ciudad Vieja (Old City), with art deco buildings, colonial homes and Mercado del Puerto, an old port market with many steakhouses. La Rambla, a waterfront promenade, passes fish stalls, piers and parks.
- Uruguay is the smallest Spanish speaking country in South America.
- Uruguay means “river of painted birds”
- Uruguay is the biggest consumer of beef in the world.
- It has the longest national anthem in the world.
- Uruguay hosted the 1st World cup ever.
- Uruguayans drink “mate”.
Uruguayans are also fútbol fanatics. The first World Cup was held in 1930 in Montevideo and Uruguay defeated Argentina to become the first World Cup champions in history – a matter of great national pride! Uruguayans are laid back, warm, friendly and family-oriented.
Even though only around 10% of the land is arable, agriculture is the largest export sector in Uruguay. It accounts for 6.9% of the GDP and employs 8.4% of the active population. Uruguay has rich agricultural land and almost 90% of it is devoted to livestock breeding (cattle, sheep, horses and pigs).
