ICS-WISTA Scholarship Program 2019-2020

July 8, 2019

For the third consecutive year, WISTA International and the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers UK are partnering to offer five (5) scholarships to individual WISTA members for the 2019-2020 academic year.  The scholarships will allow recipients to achieve the Foundation Diploma, which is ideal for people with some maritime experience who would like to gain additional practical knowledge and sound qualifications to help advance their careers.  All coursework is done online; there is no need to travel except possibly to an approved testing center to take the final exams, typically in May.  Coursework begins in September 2019.

We attach for your consideration several documents, including a program description, acceptance criteria for applicants, the application form, and a Memorandum of Understanding to be executed by each candidate:

Please note:  This rigorous program is not only very challenging intellectually, but also a significant time commitment.  If you are thinking of applying for one of these scholarships, please read carefully the documents attached above and pay close attention to the program description, formal criteria for applicants, student information, and testimonials from prior year candidates that are included in the Cover Letter.

Deadline:  WISTA USA is permitted to submit two (2) candidates for consideration by WISTA’s HR Committee.  To allow the Board of WISTA USA sufficient time to review the applications and make our selections before ExCo’s deadline, we ask that interested candidates submit their completed application and MOU to Parker Harrison no later than 5pm EDT on Monday, July 8th.  Please also note that incomplete or late applications will not be considered.

Want more information?  To help you decide whether this program might be for you, please feel free to reach out to WISTA USA Member Alexandra Hagerty, who currently serves as Chief Mate on board the USNS BOWDITCH, and Anna Silva, who is in Port Operations at Port Everglades.  Alex and Anna were the two WISTA USA members who was awarded an ICS-WISTA scholarship for the 2018-2019 academic year.  They sat for their exams in May and eagerly await the results; in the meantime, they can answer any questions you might have about how the program really works, how much effort and time are involved, etc.
