WISTA at IMO SENSREC Project in Bangladesh

On Tuesday July 2nd, the International Maritime Organization along with the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Dhaka and the Government of Bangladesh conducted a Careers Fair for Women in the Ship Recycling Industry under the IMO SENSREC project.

Raimah Chowdhury, WISTA International ExCo Member for Asia and President of WISTA Bangladesh, presented and launched IMO’s ‘Gender Sensitization Manual for the Ship Recycling Industry’ at this event. During the panel, she also discussed why women should explore this as a career opportunity and why women should join WISTA.

His Excellency, Norwegian Ambassador Espen Rikter-Svendsen in Dhaka, reassured his commitment to the success of the project. Thank you to John Alonso and Iffat Ahamed for organizing this important event where many from the Ship Recycling Industry in Bangladesh were present and a strong panel of women were able to exchange their views on why there should be more women in the country working in this field.

Following the implementation of the  Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, four ship recycling yards in Bangladesh have been certified as green.
